The Gurk valley is one of the most historic areas in Carinthia. The Gurk Cathedral was the ecclesiastical center of Carinthia for many years and Strassburg Castle was the seat of the bishops from the 12th to the 18th century. Hochosterwitz Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Austria, and the castle path is one of the rarest in castle construction due to its versatile safeguards.

Maria Saal is the oldest church in Carinthia and was built around 750 AD. The Carinthian ducal chair (consisting of 2 stone seats colliding back to back) was used for ducal investiture from the 12th to the 17th century.
