Carinthian Symphony Orchestra St. John Passion
MASTER CONCERT / DIRECTOR Philipp Ahmann / Choir of the City Theatre Klagenfurt / CHOIR INSTRUCTION Günter Wallner
The St. John Passion, first performed on Good Friday 1724, marked the beginning of Johann Sebastian Bach's almost three-decade-long tenure as Thomaskantor of Leipzig. Based on the Passion narrative of the Gospel of John, the work surprised the congregation with hitherto unknown vocal drama and symphonic force. In addition to the solos, who comment on and reflect on the events in freely composed arias, the choir plays a prominent role: it embodies the excited crowd, but also gives the listeners space for contemplative pause in detailed chorales.
