Maya Deren was born Eleonora Derenkowsky in Kiev in 1917. A victim of anti-Semitism, she fled with her parents to the United States in 1922. In the 1940s, she began working on experimental silent films. During her short creative period, she strongly influenced the avant-garde film scene in America. With her passing in 1961, she left behind a body of work of six short films and other unfinished films, two books and several publications on film as an art form, which turned society's attention to experimental films and continues to influence filmmakers today.
Together with the Noreia String Quartet, Sebastian Weiss performs the music live to the films and promises viewers and listeners an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.
