Tristan und Isolde
King Marke of Cornwall wants to marry the Irish princess Isolde for political reasons to secure peace between the two countries. However, Tristan, Marke's nephew and vassal, and Isolde fall in love with each other.
The basic constellation in Richard Wagner's music drama corresponds to a classic tale of love and jealousy, in which personal feelings and societal duties come into conflict. However, the love of Tristan and Isolde transcends all social norms.
From this realization, Wagner develops a musically intoxicating discourse on the ruthless unconditionality of love, to which the individual is as subjugated as to the power of death.
In a transcendent glorification, Wagner unites the lovers in death – and yet leaves it open whether the final transfiguration signifies the fulfillment of love or its ultimate extinguishment.
