The House of Archaeology at Kathreinkogel

The 772 meter high Kathreinkogel, which stands out strikingly from the valley floor and is located between the Drau River and the western bay of Lake Wörthersee, has been inhabited since the 7th millennium BC.

Surface finds indicate that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (7th/6th millennium BC) and Neolithic farmers (3rd millennium BC) already used the mountain as a settlement site. Today there are excavation sites from 3 millennia on the Kathreinkogel with an associated museum. In addition, the Kathreinkogel offers a beautiful panoramic view of Lake Wörthersee and the Rosental valley.

The House of Archaeology is divided into two sections

In the north wing you will find general information about basic questions of the European history of mankind
The south wing offers a cross-section of the finds excavated on the Kathreinkogel and on the cemetery of Frög/Rosegg (ceramics, glass, fibulae, etc.) as well as documentation of the archaeological works

Opening hours & prices:
The Kathreinkogel is freely accessible. The "House of Archaeology" is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in July and August (closed in case of rain). Admission free.
