Book presentation: Miriam Metze: "Loving Unreturned". A Philosophical Comfort, Mairisch, 2026 

Is there a worse feeling than loving someone who does not love you back? Is it really love or just a dream, a wish, an escape from reality? And what helps against heartache — chocolate, alcohol, binge-watching … or even philosophy? The philosopher Miriam Metze shows in her clever and entertaining book that the experience of not being loved back can be much more than just a bothersome side effect of our romantic existence — namely, the starting point of productive thinking, with which she reexamines the question of the nature of love.

“I have not lost you, but the world,” wrote Ingeborg Bachmann. After the end of her relationship with Max Frisch, she takes stock. What remained were, among other things: the keys, the tea bowls, the sheets, the bread basket, and a bed. Metze will read this chapter in Klagenfurt. In her reflections in the volume “Loving Unreturned,” she draws a broad arc from ancient philosophy and biblical references through Jewish mysticism and Renaissance philosophy to the latest debates of our present. From Socrates to Hannah Arendt, from Rilke to Bachmann.

Miriam Metze
born in 1987, is a philosopher. She lives in Vienna and teaches in adult education, her areas of expertise: phenomenology, ancient and political philosophy, philosophy of religion. Metze's book “Loving Unreturned” has been published by Mairisch.
