Directions

From the Sveta Ana church, you reach the forecourt of the border station via a few steps and cross the main road before the tunnel portal. Via a narrow path and the old Loibl Pass road, you reach the former border crossing (1,367 m) with a managed hut on the Slovenian side after just under 2 km (45 min.). From there, the trail descends past the ruins of the Alt-St. Leonhard church to the Loiblpass main road on the Austrian side. Follow the main road downhill for around 500 m and then turn left. Via an access road you reach the "Strach" farm and a little later the "Maurer" farms. From here, the trail continues slightly downhill along an asphalt road to the "Pagitz" estate. You now cross the long-distance hiking trail 03 and after around 500 m you come to a wayside shrine, where you turn right. You now walk steeply downhill over hill and dale for about 20 minutes to the "Deutscher Peter" inn, which you reach after about 10 km (3 hours).

A few meters after the "Deutscher Peter", the pilgrims' path branches off from the main road and you hike slightly uphill to the left towards the Tschaukofall, from where, after experiencing a fascinating natural spectacle, you descend over a suspension bridge and metal ladders into the Tscheppaschlucht gorge. At the southern exit of the Tscheppaschlucht gorge, hikers have to pay to enter.

It is about 4 km from "Deutscher Peter" to the end of the Tscheppaschlucht gorge. Here the hiking trail joins a cycle path that leads straight ahead along the Loiblbach stream to Unterloibl and from there on to Ferlach. The 8 km from "Deutscher Peter" to Ferlach takes another 3 hours. The entire stage takes 5 - 6 hours, not including breaks.

Safety instructions

ATTENTION:

Attention: As of now, the section of the path at the so-called Maurerhöfe farms (vulgo Jurgele and vulgo Metschisch) is closed on the 1st stage of the Hemma pilgrimage route from Sveta Ana to Gurk. As it is not possible to bypass the farms due to the steep terrain, all pilgrims are advised to start the pilgrimage stage from Gasthof Deutscher Peter. An alternative route is being worked on.

In rainy weather, special care should be taken in the Tscheppaschlucht gorge, as the wooden steps and bridges are extremely slippery when wet. Opening times: From the beginning of May to the end of October

The pilgrims' path is to be walked at your own risk.

Tips

The key for the church of Sveta Ana is available in the house next to the branch church.
