Directions

The first stage of the Southern Alps Panorama Trail begins in the village of Thörl-Maglern. The trail leads past the parish church of St. Andreas in Thörl, initially slightly downhill along the road to the Gailitz watercourse. Following the trail markings, after a short forest passage we reach a wooden bridge over which we reach the other bank. Continue straight ahead and between the nearby buildings to the asphalt road. Follow this road in an easterly direction for a good kilometer until you reach the Maurer farmstead.

Follow the signpost along the road steadily uphill. After two changes of direction, we soon reach a meadow with a crossroads, now following the road uphill for a while. As the mountain slopes become steeper, the forest becomes more and more interspersed with deciduous trees; passing a geological outcrop and numerous hunters' hides, we leave the road at 960 m above sea level (signpost) and follow the path steeply uphill through an idyllic mixed mountain forest; after approx. 200 meters in altitude, the path crosses a road and after a few minutes' walk finally joins another road.

Follow this in an easterly direction uphill; shortly before the old customs hut, follow the trail markings and a path that runs to the left of the hut. After a steeper start, this path becomes flatter and leads to the summit of the Homitsch. From now on, we follow the marked trail along the border ridge; an ecological highlight of this section of the trail are undoubtedly the numerous ant hills that line the path. At the end of the last ascent, just before the summit of the Dreiländereck, we have the opportunity to visit an old fortress.

The view from the Dreiländereck is magnificent: the Dobratsch south face with the Schütt below (the largest landslide area in the Eastern Alps), the Gailtal Alps, the Carnic Alps, the Gailtal valley with the Gailtal breakthrough, the Rosental valley, the Villach basin, the Nockberge mountains and the imposing Julian Alps close to the south are strung out before us like a string of pearls.

The impressive panorama accompanies us further along the path towards the Seltschacher Alm, with a short descent and ascent along the ski area. From the top station of the chairlift, continue towards the Wurzenpass. We cross under the steep slope of the Hahnenwipfels, followed by a short forest passage until we reach a road. We follow this further downhill in an easterly direction until a striking copper beech marks the junction with a path, along which we hike the last 250 meters steeply downhill to the Wurzenpass.

Safety instructions

10 recommendations from the ÖAV

As an outdoor sport, mountain hiking offers great opportunities for health, community and experience. The following recommendations from the alpine associations are designed to make mountain hikes as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. healthy in the mountains
Mountain hiking is an endurance sport. The positive stress stimuli for the heart and circulation require good health and a realistic self-assessment. Avoid time pressure and choose a pace that ensures no one in the group gets out of breath.

2. careful planning
Hiking maps, guide books, the internet and experts provide information on length, altitude difference, difficulty and current conditions. Always adapt tours to the group! Pay particular attention to the weather forecast, as rain, wind and cold increase the risk of accidents.

3. complete equipment
Adapt your equipment to your tour and make sure your rucksack is light. Rain, cold and sun protection should always be in your backpack, as well as a first aid kit and cell phone (Euro emergency number 112). A map or GPS will help you find your way.

4. suitable footwear
Good hiking boots protect and relieve your feet and improve surefootedness! When making your choice, look for a perfect fit, non-slip tread sole, waterproofness and low weight.

5. sure-footedness is the key
Falls as a result of slipping or tripping are the most common cause of accidents! Be aware that excessive speed or tiredness can severely impair your surefootedness and concentration. Watch out for falling rocks: by walking carefully, you can avoid falling rocks.

6. stay on marked trails
In pathless terrain, the risk of losing your bearings, falling and falling rocks increases. Avoid shortcuts and return to the last known point if you lose your way. Often underestimated and very dangerous: steep old snowfields!

7. take regular breaks
Timely breaks help you to relax, enjoy the scenery and socialize. Eating and drinking are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Isotonic drinks are ideal thirst quenchers. Muesli bars, dried fruit and cookies satisfy hunger along the way.

8. responsibility for children
Make sure that the focus is on variety and playful discovery for children! In passages where there is a risk of falling, one adult can only supervise one child. Very exposed tours that require prolonged concentration are not suitable for children.

9. small groups
Small groups ensure flexibility and enable mutual help. Inform people you know about the destination, route and return. Stay together in the group. Beware of lone hikers: even minor incidents can lead to serious emergencies.

10. respect for nature and the environment
To protect the mountain environment: do not leave any waste behind, avoid noise, stay on the paths, do not disturb wild animals and grazing animals, leave plants untouched and respect protected areas. Use public transport or form car pools to get there.
