The south side of the Villacher Alpe is the largest landslide massif in the Southern Alps. In 1348, an earthquake caused the entire southern side of the mountain to collapse, killing almost 2,000 people. Boulders along the highway still bear witness to this event today. This area is now a nature reserve (Carinthia's 1st nature park) and provides a habitat for rare animals and plants. The highest church in Europe is located at the summit of the Villacher Alpe, at 2,160 m above sea level. The ascent to the Windische Höhe is short but all the steeper at almost 20%. There is also a short but easy ascent to the Krastal valley, known above all for the mining of white Krastal marble.

Tips
If you want to avoid the short but steep climb to the Windische Höhe, cycle via Bad Bleiberg to Villach and from there into the Krastal valley. Approx. 200 meters in altitude and 15 kilometers less.
