A crime novel from Vienna-Meidling

The latest news at the Meidlinger Markt? A dead body found in the neighborhood opens a completely new chapter for Josy, a recently retired bookseller.

Grandmother against Goliath? Josy's help is needed.
A good book, a cup of coffee, a purring cat within petting distance – that would be how a perfect day in retirement would look for Josy Cerny. Would be! If it weren't for a boy who approached her during a shopping trip to the Meidlinger Markt asking for help, as a construction company threatens to violently take over her grandmother’s market stall. As he tells Josy about his family, she can hardly believe the coincidence. The boy is related to Josy’s current research project, or rather the subject of her research: the legendary Johann “Schani” Breitwieser, who has secured a place in the city's history as the “Robin Hood of Vienna.”

Swindlers, charm, and a lot of coffee
Sabotage, blackmail, and finally a dead body – it quickly becomes clear to Josy that this is a (shopping) web of lies that threatens to expand even further. Hurt knee or not – Josy must take action. In the hope of uncovering more about the suspicious events occurring in and around the Meidlinger Markt, Josy and her friend, also a bookseller and previously only a reader in the field of criminal investigations, sneak unnoticed into the corporate web that includes the ruthless construction company. What they uncover here is – quite unlike Josy's book tips on breakfast television – not meant for public consumption. Josy likes to believe in the good in people, but too much of the good also makes her uneasy: Like the suspiciously unremarkable transfers from the construction company to various donation accounts – has the “Robin Hood of Vienna” somehow made it into the 21st century? One thing is for sure: Josy Cerny will have to be satisfied a little longer with the anticipation of a cozy afternoon with melange and a good book.

Rotraut Schöberl takes us into the Vienna district of Meidling, especially to the neighborhood around the Meidlinger Markt, and allows a glimpse into the present and the past – accompanied by: interesting facts about almost forgotten Viennese personalities, matching book recommendations from Ms. Schöberl herself, and a touch of optimism that is probably never misplaced in turbulent times. Together with a detective who shows charming parallels to the author herself, we dive well-equipped into Vienna off the beaten path.

Rotraut Schöberl was born in Reichenau an der Rax and lives in Vienna. She is known, among other things, for her book recommendations, which she shared for years on the Austrian breakfast television program Café Puls. In addition, she has published several anthologies and has been engaged as a juror and member of various committees. In 1994, she co-founded the Vienna cult bookstore Leporello with Erwin Riedesser – a labor of love that the two have handed over to new hands after 30 years to dedicate themselves as a writing duo. Under the pseudonym Flores & Santana, they write crime novels that reflect their fascination for the Canary Islands. In the current crime novel “Frau Cernys Instinkt für Verbrechen,” however, the Austrian capital takes center stage – with a detective who has charming parallels to the author herself.

Galerie ZUGänglicheKUNST at Pörtschach Station. The reading takes place in the listed rooms of the train station in Pörtschach. We welcome you with coffee and cake and will personally guide you through the current exhibition after the reading.
