Gerald Eschenauer recites for the 150th anniversary of R. M. Rilke

On December 4, 1875, René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke was born in Prague. 150 years later, on the exact day, actor and writer Gerald Eschenauer reads a carefully compiled collection from the pen of the world literary figure in the Villach parish church St. Jakob. Rilke's greatest works, unknown correspondence, and prose texts alternate with musical delicacies from Bach to Piazzolla, interpreted by Lorenz Pichler, flute and Vukašin Mišković, guitar.

“Anyone who hasn't read Rilke hasn't really lived,” enthuses Eschenauer, referring to the magnificent, timeless form, image- and word-powerful poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. The poet was directly active at the upper Adriatic. The “Duino Elegies," which address central questions of human existence, were created in the Duino Castle near Trieste between 1912 and 1922.

About the artist & author

Gerald Eschenauer lives in Villach, Vienna, and Rijeka. The native of Glantal is a writer, actor, and philosopher. So far, 13 books by Eschenauer have been published. In 2013, he founded BUCH13, the association for the promotion of local writers. His poetry collection “Erdung” will be published by Mitgift Publishing in 2025.
