Hitler's Executive. The Austrian Police and National Socialism

After World War II, the victims of National Socialism in the police and gendarmerie were primarily remembered. The perpetrators' roles remained largely unexamined.
Today we know that the police played a central role in enforcing and maintaining Nazi rule.

The exhibition provides an overview of the organization, responsibilities, and mindset of the executive during National Socialism, including the breaks and continuities before and after Nazi rule.
Through biographies, it shows the fates and behaviors of Austrian policemen and gendarmes – from freedom struggle to tyranny and murder.

In particular, the aim is to highlight different perspectives and courses of action. For the kärnten.museum, the exhibition was expanded with content specifically addressing the activities of the police in Carinthia and in the then-occupied Slovenian Upper Carniola.
