Joseph Haydn The Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross,
Hob. XX/1:B = Hob. III:50–56

Joseph Haydn's “The Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross” (Hob. XX/1B, 1787) is a masterful, meditative passion music, which the composer himself adapted from the orchestral version for string quartet. The work consists of seven slow sonatas and a concluding “Earthquake movement.” The string quartet version is considered particularly concentrated and intense in its sonic representation of pain, hope, and redemption.
