Castle Ebenthal

In the 16th century Christoph von Neuhaus, then Lord of Greifenfels, built a new castle from the foundations up which, with the permission of the archduke, he subsequently named ”Ebenthal”. This simultaneously marks the day that the market town we know today was christened. In 1704, Cardinal Johann Trooch von Goosen purchased the castle for his nephew Johann Peter Graf Goess, in whose family it remains to this day. The castle was later remodeled on several occasions. Josef Ferdinand Fromiller, probably Carinthia’s most famous baroque painter, was commissioned in 1748 to provide frescoes for the entire Great Hall on the second floor.
