Carnic Alps GeoPark

The Carnic Alps GeoPark is something like the time machine of the World of Mountains & Lakes. After all, visiting the 830-square kilometre GeoPark near the Italian border feels like a journey back in time. Way back in time, that is!

No other region in the Alpine area boasts quite as many Palaeozoic relics as the Carnic Alps GeoPark. Ancient stone formations, mysterious fossils – there’s a hidden treasure behind every corner, all of it surrounded by a spectacular natural landscape with crystal-clear mountain lakes, thundering waterfalls and shady gorges.

• Garnitzenklamm geo trail
getting there: Hermagor – Möderndorf – road up to Egger Alm – Garnitzenklamm parking lot
route: parking lot (612 m) – Ida Warte – Franzens Warte – Unterstand – Klause (1,107 m)
total length: about 6 km (one way)
duration: 4 h there and back
tour extension: via Garnitzenalm to Nassfeld (about 3 h) or via Kühweger Alm and Kühweger Sattel to Nassfeld (about 2 h)

• Wolayersee geo trail
Option 1
getting there: Birnbaum – Nostra – Hubertuskapelle parking lot (1,114 m)
route: walk along the road to Untere and Obere Wolayeralm – Wolayerseehütte (1,967 m)
total length: about 6.5 km
duration: about 3 h
Option 2
getting there: from Plöckenstraße to Südalpen-Weg 03: parking lot Ghf.
route: Valentinalm (1,205 m) – Obere Valentinalm (1,540 m) – Valentintörl (2,138 m)
