Klagenfurt Parish Church & Pfarrplatz
Once, the oldest church in Klagenfurt stood at this site, a Marian church that was first mentioned in a document in 1255. After fires and the earthquake of 1692, the foundation stone was laid by Johann Friedrich Orsini-Rosenberg.
Numerous tombstones adorn the outer walls of the church, which were once marked by the unadorned facade design by the Viennese architect Friedrich Schachner.
The city parish church is known for its magnificent vaulted paintings with a ceiling fresco by the most significant painter of Carinthian Baroque, Josef Ferdinand Fromiller. Also visible are, among others, paintings by Josef Mölckh, Josef Anton Cusetti, and Egon Rubin.
Particularly noteworthy is the colloquially named Fuchskapelle by the artist Ernst Fuchs. Ernst Fuchs dedicated himself to one of the most complex biblical themes: The apocalypse is depicted on approximately 160 m² of wall and ceiling space.
Professor Ernst Fuchs worked on his life's work for an incredible 20 years.
The city parish tower offers a beautiful panoramic view of the old town of Klagenfurt and its surroundings from its observation deck at a height of 50 meters.
