The Gallery in the Town Gmünd

The Kunsthaus Gmünd presents in 2025, in collaboration with the Gerrish Family Collection and the Gerrish Fine Art Gallery, London, a rich selection of lithographs, etchings, screen prints, poster art, and digital art by David Hockney. With over 80 works, the exhibition spans from the 1960s to the last decade and invites visitors for the first time in southern Austria to dive into the kaleidoscope of form, color, and perspective of David Hockney, an artist who makes the ordinary extraordinary.

The Kunsthaus Gmünd presents in 2025, in collaboration with the Gerrish Family Collection and the Gerrish Fine Art Gallery, London, a rich selection of lithographs, etchings, screen prints, poster art, and digital art by David Hockney. With over 120 works, the exhibition spans from the 1960s to the last decade and invites visitors for the first time in southern Austria to dive into the kaleidoscope of form, color, and perspective of David Hockney, an artist who makes the ordinary extraordinary. In a proven format, the selection of exhibits is complemented by impressive photographs from the great artist photographer Edward Quinn, who captured many artistic personalities of the 20th century in an incomparably personal manner with his camera. The influences of Hockney's art on contemporary art will also be reflected in the Gmünd exhibition: exciting contemporary engagements with Hockney and his themes will enrich the visit to the exhibition.

David Hockney (born 1937 in Bradford, England) is a draftsman, painter, graphic artist, set designer, and photographer. In the 1960s, he was a leading member of the Pop Art movement, and today he is considered one of the most influential and well-known artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2018, Hockney's painting "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" created in 1972 was sold at Christie's New York for $90 million, an auction result that catapulted the artist to the top of the list of the most expensive living artists.

Hockney became known especially for his pool paintings of the 1960s, the sensitive portraits of his friends and family members, his distinctive landscape representations, and photographic collages. The artist always uses a broad spectrum of artistic possibilities and also incorporates new technical innovations into his work: for several years, he has increasingly worked with iPad and iPhone, painting digital landscapes and collaborating closely with app programmers. David Hockney is driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge; he explores the techniques of old masters and also takes on new technical challenges that continually change his ways of seeing and representing throughout his career.

Hockney in Gmünd

The exhibition at the Kunsthaus Gmünd showcases the diversity of the graphic oeuvre of cosmopolitan David Hockney: Alongside the milestones of his graphic work – the etching series "A Rake's Progress," "14 Poems for Konstantinos Kavafis," and "Six Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm" – individual selected lithographic masterpieces, such as his pool paintings and posters for the 1984 Winter Olympics, impressively demonstrate the poetic artistic cosmos of David Hockney. The exhibition is complemented by print works from his fellow student and contemporary Norman Ackroyd, as well as historical predecessors of David Hockney, such as J.M.W. Turner or John Constable.

The opening of the exhibition takes place on May 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Kunsthaus Gmünd. The exhibition can be viewed from May 25 to October 5, 2025, daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. We are happy to open the exhibition from 8 a.m. upon request, especially for registered school classes.
