Imposing, impressive and expressive, the Mittagskogel rises above the Faakersee. The well-marked trail leads through mountain pine slopes and scree trenches to the 2145-metre-high summit cross, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Julian Alps, the Gail and Gurktal valleys and the Hohe Tauern. A hearty snack will then be waiting for you at the Berta hut to fortify you for the descent.

Directions:
Take the B85 (Rosentalstraße) to Unteraichwald and turn off onto Kopeiner Straße at Hotel Mittagskogel. At the Kopein junction, leave the asphalt road and turn right towards Bertahütte.
Parking:
There are a few parking spaces along the forest road.
Directions
The road branches off from Hotel Mittagskogel in the direction of Berta Hütte and you can drive as far as you can. Follow the red-white-red trail markings Steig 681 or 603 to the Ferlacher Sattel (Berta Hütte). From there, take the Hornerweg trail, always following the 680 markings, through mountain pine slopes and scree ditches to the Mittagskogelscharte. Now continue along the south-east slope to the summit cross of the Mittagskogel (2145m). On the descent, take the same path as the ascent back to the Ferlacher Sattel. From here, the trail climbs slightly to the right to the Bertahütte (1567 m), where you can take a short break and then continue your descent in two different ways. A shady forest path to the right of the Bertahüttetal, which crosses the forest road a few times, or the forest road directly.

Tips
Stop off at the Bertahütte. As an easier alternative, you can hike from the Bertahütte to the Ferlacher Spitze.
