Although Camille Saint-Saëns did not compose his "Carnival of the Animals" for children, this work is now considered one of the musical classics for children. The French composer wanted his music to evoke special images in the minds of listeners, allowing his own imagination to run free.
What do you hear when lions march in? Which instruments sound like chickens, zebras, or elephants? And what do fish or fossils actually sound like? Like in hardly any other work, the music tells evocative stories and creates an overview of the broad spectrum of musical possibilities with its 14 distinctly different animal characteristics.
