SHORT ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Bertahütte-Südalpenweg 603/Kärntner Grenzweg-Ferlacher Alm-Gratschenitzengraben-Krw. Bärental-Rosenbach-Maria Elend-Greuth-Suchagraben-/St. Rupert-Matschach-Olipitzkreuz-Alt St. Michael-Neu St. Michael-Stouhütte/673-Johannsenruhe-Matschacher Alm-Klagenfurter Hütte/603/KGW

EXACT ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

1. we walk from the hut (1527 m) and the Ferlacher Alm on a path (Südalpenweg 603 (SAW)) and Kärntner Grenzweg (KGW)) Head SW downhill and after approx. 200 m you come to a main farm track (HWW), which you follow to the left, SE. At a fork after approx. 200 m we turn left, NE, also after approx. 1.6 km - we leave the HWW after approx. 2.9 km to the right (E) and walk into the Gratschenitzengraben - before that we ignore three paths to the left and one to the right. After crossing the stream, we take our 1st break at the signposts in Schönbrunnen, 5.7 km, 910 m.

ALTERNATIVE 1: Southeast of the Bertahütte follow paths 679 and 679A to Schönbrunnen in the Gratschenitzengraben (saving: 900 m. Additional effort: 30 min., 90 m ascent and descent).

2. the two long-distance hiking trails and trail no. 679A lead us out of the Gratschenitzengraben (E), ignoring a path to the right after approx. 2 km. After approx. 700 m we cross under the Karawanken highway A 11 and after approx. 500 m we reach the foothills of the Bärengraben (right) with the start of the Südalpenweg variant 603A or the connection to the Panoramaweg Südalpen - we take the 2nd break at the Bärental power station, 8.9 km, 612 m.

3. we follow the asphalt road and ignore the old KGW to the right after about 300 m. The Südalpenweg 03 leaves the road just after the bridge over the Rosenbach in a southerly direction into the forest - after approx. 300 m it meets the old KGW at the Bf Rosenbach junction - both lead to the left, east.

4. after approx. 400 m we turn left at a fork and meet the road to Rosenbach again - just before the Rosenbach viaduct we follow the two WWWs to the right, SE and after approx. 200 m we take the 3rd break at the bridge over the Rosenbach tributary , 11.9 km, 557 m.

5. we head SE and meet a HWW coming up on the right, which we follow to a junction - here we go at an acute angle to the right, S, to leave this HWW again after approx. 50 m to the left, SE. After approx. 700 m, the two WWWs turn half-right to the mountain chapels.

ALTERNATIVE 2: Follow the Südalpenweg 03 and the Kärntner Grenzweg via the mountain chapels north of the Kapellenberg (additional: 1 km and 1 ¼ hours walking time).

6. after approx. 500 m, turn half-right at a fork and immediately afterwards join a HWW coming from the left and a hiking trail between Maria Elend and the mountain chapels (579 m). After approx. 50 m, turn half-right again at the fork and after approx. 500 m you reach a crossroads - the WWW comes from the right (from the chapels). At the next fork, we continue straight ahead on a less pronounced hiking trail and after approx. 1.3 km to the Große Suchagraben and Große Dürrenbach and the bridge (4th break, 16.6 km, 554 m).

7. we stay on the Südalpenweg and KGW heading SE and reach a large crossroads north of the Fronwiese (6 paths) - we continue straight ahead and after approx. 900 m reach the Kleiner Suchagraben and Kleiner Dürrenbach. After crossing the stream, we head immediately to the right, SE and after approx. 600 m come to another crossroads with a HWW - we follow this to the right, SE and after approx. 600 m cross another HWW. After a further 700 m this HWW ends - we head to the left, E and after approx. 400 m reach the filial church of St. Rupert near Matschach (5th break, 20.7 km, 646 m).

8. we go up with the HWW to follow the WWW and at the crossroads we walk at an acute angle to the SE - on the way to the Olipitz cross/ wayside shrine we ignore 5 paths to the left and 3 to the right. From the wayside shrine we hike on a HWW coming from the left with path no. 673 - this accompanies us to the Stouhütte.

9. shortly after the Olipitz cross we turn SW and at a fork turn half right - after approx. 300 m we leave the HWW and continue half left to hike around the Matschacher Gupf in a right-hand bend. [Caution! After a left-hand bend, leave the gravel path (dead end) and continue to the right on a path that is not very pronounced at the beginning]. Approx. 300 before the Motitz estate we take the 6th break, 24.9 km, 940 m.

10. after approx. 1.6 km we reach Alt St. Michael, walking steadily uphill in a clearing, and take the 7th break at the small church , 26.5 km, 1142 m. We head W and meet a HWW coming from the right - at the Plautz estate we ignore the WW (No. 699) going off to the right and go straight ahead immediately afterwards at a fork. After approx. 500 m we reach the Neu St. Michael chapel with the memorial (Dr. Haider).

11 After approx. 400 m we leave the HWW and follow a path down to the left, SE to the Bärentalstraße coming from the left - we are in the Oberes Bärental and close to the Stouhütte (953 m). We ignore the hiking trail (603A and 672) to the right and SW and continue straight ahead on the asphalt path (Südalpenweg and KGW) up to the well-signposted PP - after approx. 650 m we reach the Johannsenruhe clearing "in the corner" (8th break, 31 km, 1230 m).

Alternative 3: After the Johannsenruhe at 1378 m above sea level, stay on the gravel access road (additional effort: 1 km).

12. we walk along the HWW in a southerly direction - (shortcut: after approx. 300 m a narrow path leads up to the HWW on the left) - and leave the long-distance hiking trails 03 and KGW after approx. 1.3 km. Now we hike on a path to a viewpoint at the northern foothills of the Hochstuhlkar, the start of the Hochstuhl via ferrata (664) - we take the 9th break, 32.5 km, 1450 m.

13. we hike upwards on a path for approx. 200 m and meet the HWW with the two WWWs again - we follow this access path to the hut in an easterly direction below the Matschacher Alm and reach the stage destination, the Klagenfurter Hütte (33.8 km, 1664 m), in the eastern part of the hut.
