The Freibachtal valley was once an area of busy industrial activity.
The iron ore extracted from the Obir was processed here. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Freibach was still driving the water wheels of three iron hammers, several sawmills and numerous mills. The forests up to the rocky regions were felled for charcoal production for the smelting of the iron ore. Attentive observers can still recognize the old charcoal piles by the black humus and the small pieces of charcoal. The last remains of weirs and channels that have not yet been washed away by floods can be discovered. Today, the stream has reclaimed its bed and the forest has overgrown the ruins.

From Ferlach via Zell Pfarre to Zell Freibach.
From Gallizien via Freibacher Stausee to Zell Freibach. The route can of course also be walked in reverse. In this case, the Freibacher Stausee is the ideal starting point.

Gasthaus Terklbauer or alternatively Gasthaus Stauseewirt at the Freibacher reservoir
Directions
Start: Terklbauer Inn
A few minutes along the country road, then up to the left (signpost). Follow the hiking trail and descend steeply in a few hairpin bends to the bed of the Freibach stream. Along the rushing water, the path leads past ponds and over bridges in a pleasantly cool direction to the north. Later you come to an unpaved forest road, which you follow to the asphalt road and from here to the Freibacher Stausee reservoir in just a few minutes. It is high time for a hearty Carinthian snack at the Gasthaus am Freibacher Stausee. Invigorated and refreshed, as the crystal-clear waters of the reservoir are also perfect for swimming for those who are not sensitive to the cold, you then return via the familiar route.
