instructions

From the Bertahütte, we briefly follow the hiking trail south towards Mittagskogel until we reach a crossroads at the Ferlacher Sattel. Here, the original Panoramaweg Südalpen (Southern Alps Panorama Trail) leads straight ahead on the black mountain trail as a normal trail (marked "680") to the summit of Mittagskogel.

Initially, the trail meanders gently through the sparse forests and crosses the western flank on the lower edge in a southerly direction without any major differences in altitude. The path then becomes increasingly gravelly, and in sections even more steep, with a few gullies and short steep steps to negotiate. The path, which is lined with mountain pines, has been made somewhat less steep by numerous steps and seeks the easiest way through this wild environment to the walls of the Hühnerkogel. From here, numerous hairpin bends lead up to the 2,070 m high saddle. If you wish, you can climb the Mittagskogel(2,145 m) in about 15 minutes on foot via the path running just below the ridge.

The Panoramaweg Südalpen branches off to the south-east at the saddle towards Hühnerkogel and becomes increasingly alpine with steep crossings. The trail, which is partly lined with mountain pines, essentially follows the course of the ridge either directly on the ridge or in the alpine turf slightly below it. In the incision northwest of the Hühnerkogel, insurance makes it easier to continue, but surefootedness, a head for heights and climbing skills are still required here. Motivated hikers can still take the Hühnerkogel (2,034 m) with them via a short ascent.

To the south-east of the Hühnerkogel, we reach the Krainer Törl via gentler terrain. Over the grassy southern slopes of the Bärenkogel, the trail now descends slightly at first towards the Mlinzasattel. The trail joins a Slovenian trail at a spring at approx. 1,600 m and leads at a constant altitude to the Mlinzasattel (1,581 m).

The next prominent peak on the trail is the Frauenkogel (1,892 m), which is bypassed on the Slovenian side - here, too, a climb is possible and also worthwhile. Trail no. 1 and 678A join at the saddle between Frauenkogel and Rosenkogel. Directly on the border, the trail continues over the gentle Rosenkogel (1,776 m) to the Rosenbachsattel (1,586 m) where trail no. 678 and the alternative to this stage join.

Up to the Eckelesattel, we leave the border again and follow the trail on the slopes of the Hahnenkogel at a constant altitude of around 1,600 m. From the Eckelesattel (1,487 m) we reach the Kahlkogelhütte, slow. Koča na Golici (1,573 m), the well-deserved stage destination.

Alternative route description:

From the Berta hut, we briefly follow the hiking trail south towards Mittagskogel until we reach a crossroads at the Ferlacher Sattel. Here, the original Panoramaweg Südalpen trail leads straight uphill to the Mittagskogel.

However, we turn left and walk down the forest road ("603" or Kärntner Grenzweg) into the Gratschenitzengraben. In between, we change to a path directly in the ditch before we meet another forest road that takes us further downhill through the ditch.

At the Bärental power station, we come across the striking Bärengraben, which leads south from Rosenbach. Here we turn right onto the forest road, which takes us uphill towards Rosenbachsattel. Here we return to the original route of the former first stage of the Southern Alps Panorama Trail. The forest road is shortened to the marked trail 603A/678.

Passing the private Rosenkogelhütte, we reach the Rosenbachsattel (1,587 m) and thus the "new" route of the Panoramaweg Südalpen, which joins from the west. Now we follow the marked trail in a north-easterly direction. We bypass the Hahnkogel (1,753 m) and descend first over alpine grassland and later through beech forest to the Eckelesattel (1,488 m). Now head in an easterly direction via the path located exactly on the border between forest and alpine grassland to the south, which finally leads directly to the Kahlkogel Hut (Koča na Golici, 1,582 m), our destination for this stage.

10 recommendations of the ÖAV
As an outdoor sport, mountain hiking offers great opportunities for health, community and experience. The following recommendations from the Alpine associations are designed to make mountain hikes as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. healthy in the mountains
Mountain hiking is an endurance sport. The positive stress stimuli for the heart and circulation require good health and a realistic self-assessment. Avoid time pressure and choose a pace that ensures no one in the group gets out of breath.

2. careful planning
Hiking maps, guide books, the internet and experts provide information on length, altitude difference, difficulty and current conditions. Always adapt tours to the group! Pay particular attention to the weather forecast, as rain, wind and cold increase the risk of accidents.

3. complete equipment
Adapt your equipment to your tour and make sure your rucksack is light. Rain, cold and sun protection should always be in your backpack, as well as a first aid kit and cell phone (Euro emergency number 112). A map or GPS will help you find your way.

4. suitable footwear
Good hiking boots protect and relieve your feet and improve surefootedness! When making your choice, look for a perfect fit, non-slip tread sole, waterproofness and low weight.

5. sure-footedness is the key
Falls as a result of slipping or tripping are the most common cause of accidents! Be aware that excessive speed or tiredness can severely impair your surefootedness and concentration. Watch out for falling rocks: by walking carefully, you can avoid falling rocks.

6. stay on marked trails
In pathless terrain, the risk of losing your bearings, falling and falling rocks increases. Avoid shortcuts and return to the last known point if you lose your way. Often underestimated and very dangerous: steep old snowfields!

7. take regular breaks
Timely breaks help you to relax, enjoy the scenery and socialize. Eating and drinking are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Isotonic drinks are ideal thirst quenchers. Muesli bars, dried fruit and cookies satisfy hunger along the way.

8. responsibility for children
Make sure that the focus is on variety and playful discovery for children! In passages where there is a risk of falling, one adult can only supervise one child. Very exposed tours that require prolonged concentration are not suitable for children.

9. small groups
Small groups ensure flexibility and enable mutual help. Inform people you know about the destination, route and return. Stay together in the group. Beware of lone hikers: even minor incidents can lead to serious emergencies.

10. respect for nature and the environment
To protect the mountain environment: do not leave any waste behind, avoid noise, stay on the paths, do not disturb wild animals and grazing animals, leave plants untouched and respect protected areas. Use public transport or form car pools to get there.
