Stage 20 Alpe-Adria-Trail: Ossiach - Velden

Ossiacher See
From the starting point, the historic Ossiach Abbey, it goes briefly back towards Alt-Ossiach and from there over the Ossiacher Gorge Path up to the Tauern pond. After a break at the idyllic pond, it continues relatively flat towards Oberdorf.
The filial church of St. John the Baptist in Oberdorf first appears in documents from 1355. In the vestibule are Roman stones from the surroundings and several of the rare Romanesque grave slabs built in. It is the most significant collection of such artifacts in Carinthia. In the former parish stable next to the church is the interesting museum of everyday history. Afterwards, it goes on to the Hohenwart ruin. The once extensive and heavily fortified castle complex is one of the most interesting in Carinthia. The further path follows the Roman path.
The Saissersee, also called Jeserzer See, is worth a jump into the cool water. The private lake in a marshy basin, which is only 6 meters deep, is a popular bathing lake. The slightly brownish color comes from the peat bottom around the lake. From the Velden viewing platform, a popular resting place and viewpoint above Kranzelhofen, there is a wonderful view of Wörthersee with Velden and the Karawanken in the south. We reach the cemetery-surrounded church of Kranzelhofen: basically Romanesque, the choir apex from the second half of the 14th century is Gothic.
Through the Devil's Gorge, the first promenade path, we reach the center of the dazzling holiday resort Velden. In Velden, one should not miss the villas of Wörthersee architecture, Velden Castle, and a visit to Casino Velden. Also, a relaxing vacation is nothing in the way in Velden, because outside the town center there are countless hiking trails, secluded bathing lakes, and top-class golf courses.

Directions:
The easiest way to reach Ossiach is via the A10 exit "Ossiacher See" and then along the Ossiacher Süduferstraße.
Public transportaion:
Ossiach is easily accessible by post bus from Villach.
Parking:
Free parking is available next to the mini-golf course above the football field in Ossiach (on the left towards the lake).
Directions
From Ossiach Abbey we head southwest back to the L49 Ossiacher See Süduferstraße. Just before the L49 we turn left onto a meadow path running parallel to the federal road to Rappitsch. There we cross the federal road and continue along a row of trees up the Ossiacher Tauern. To the south along a mountain stream, the gorge path rises steeply, partly equipped with steps and wooden and metal ladders, about 350 meters in elevation to the Tauernteich. The wild romantic path leads us past an old mill ruin before that. Further along path 5 – Tauern hiking trail, we reach the Sarkoparnig inn without any significant altitude difference.
From Obersakoparnig we follow path no. 2 to Oberdorf with the parish church and the Drabosnjakov Dom museum. Then it goes on to Köstenberg and on path no. 3 to the Hohenwart ruin. The Roman path, no. 2a, takes us to Oberjeserz and subsequently to the Saissersee. Walking along the shore of the Saissersee, we hike to the viewing platform in Goriach. Here we get a wonderful view of Wörthersee with Velden and the Karawanken in the south. Then it goes on to Kranzelhofen past the parish church. Walking towards Velden we only go slightly downhill. Through the Teufelsgraben we reach right into the center of Velden.
Incidentally, Velden is also located on the Wörthersee circular hiking trail, a 55 km long circular route around Carinthia's largest bathing lake.

Safety instructions
The section via the Ossiacher Schluchtweg to the Ossiacher Tauern Teich has been marked as an "alpine trail" and requires hikers to be sure-footed and careful, especially after rain (danger of slipping). The information also applies to the section through the Teufelsgraben.
