Once heavily fought over in the great world wars, the enemies today are the climbing sections along the tour. At least for the legs, because the numerous impressions that you collect along the tour compensate for many an ordeal. Constant companions are numerous monuments to the wars and their victims, sleepy places and extraordinarily much untouched nature. In addition to the Dobratsch Nature Park between Villach-Warmbad and Arnoldstein, it is above all the Triglav National Park with the crystal-clear turquoise Soča River and the Julian Alps that even the locals go into raptures over and over again.
On the tour, you should definitely remember to take regular breaks. Apart from a short breather, you can enjoy a classic Italian coffee or a Bled cream cake, among other things. After the first recommended break in Tarvisio, the road winds moderately in wide switchbacks past the former mining town of Cave del Predil up to the Predil Pass. After an impressive view of the Mangart, the road descends rapidly into the Soča Valley until shortly before Bovec, from where it goes from Trenta over 25 hairpin bends, 10km and about 1000hm to the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, the Vršič Pass (1611m). Downhill it also goes over 25 hairpin bends, some of which have rugged cobblestones. Please take special care here!
Back in the valley of the town of Kranjska Gora there is still a short breather. Even if the Cevapcici or the Selchwurst are considered as the national dish of the Slovenians, we recommend you here a cream slice, because at Podkoren it goes up another 200 meters of altitude to the Austrian border on the Wurzenpass. For all historically interested cyclists or tank fans, it is worth stopping here at the Bunker Museum, where the Cold War fortifications are accessible in the form of a museum. On the descent on the north side, special care is also required due to very steep sections (18% gradient). From the Carinthian town of Hart, it's now time to roll along to Lake Faak and on via St. Niklas and Rosegg to the well-deserved destination in Velden on Lake Wörthersee.
Since the core of the tour is very demanding anyway, it may be advisable to use the village of Hart or Arnoldstein as a starting point or destination. This way you can save about 50km driving distance.
